Paul Gallico
1897 – 1976
During the late 1930s, author Gallico decided to abandon sports writing in order to try his hand at writing fiction. The first story he wrote was in the form of an essay and was called Farewell to Sport. It was based on his change of career path. In the next few years, Gallico had become a popular short story writer for magazines. A number of his stories appeared in a premier fiction outlet of that time, Saturday Evening Post. Gallico’s novella, The Snow Goose, and several of his other works are extended versions of the magazine stories that he used to write during the initial days of his writing career. Author Gallico had once made a confession to the New York Magazine that he was a rotten novelist and was not literary at all. He just liked to tell stories and all his books also did the same. In 1939, another successful book of author Gallico was released, Adventures of the Hiram Holliday. This book is particularly well known for its TV adaptation in which actor Wally Cox had played the lead role, while Ainslie Pryor was in the supporting role. When author Gallico resigned from Daily News after deciding to become a full time writer of fiction novels, he shifted to a small village called Salcombe in Devonshire, England, from New York. Afterwards, he resided in numerous places of the world such as Monaco, England, Lichtenstein, and Mexico. The last years of Gallico were spent in Antibes, France, where he breathed his last and is also cremated. In 1955, author Gallico had taken an automobile tour of America in which he had traveled around 10,000 miles. This tour was sponsored by the Reader’s Digest. Gallico had described the tour by saying that he had not traveled so extensively in the last 20 years. Gallico enjoyed the tour with a great excitement and enthusiasm.
